How to design a reading lesson ?
It includes 3 stages. There are ; pre-reading stage, while-reading stage and post-reading stage.
Pre- reading stage: pre- reading serves to make students ready for coming text.
In the pre-reading stage;
Introduce and stimulate interest in the topic.
Motivate students by providing a reason for reading.
Arouse curiosity
Activate students' background knowledge.
As an example for this stage; showing pictures, videos or songs ,clustering and asking some questions related to the topic by doing these, we can engage the students.
While-reading stage;
While- reading is the stage when students try to comprehend the text.
We can use this stage;
To clarify content,
To help students understand the meaning and purpose of the text
To encourage effective use of reading strategies (skimming, scanning...)
As an example for this stage; asking comprehension check questions, finding irrelevant sentences in paragraphs, identifying referents.
Post-reading stage; post-reading serves to go beyond the comprehension of the text.
We can use this stage;
Transfer knowledge gained from text into other areas or skills.
Relate the text to learners' read life experiences
Expand their knowledge of the topic further/ structural and lexical knowledge further.
As an example for this stage; matching the unkown words with their definitions, areas of interest(ask students to say which part of the text is the most important/ interesting and which part is not interesting/important),or prepare a survey(students can prepare a survey about the information they just read and they can prepare questions.)
